The GitHub team announced that the Copilot service is moving out of testing and is now available to all developers, but only with a paid subscription. As the company announced during Build 2022 that it would make it available to everyone starting this summer. 

Well, the promise turned out to be true, and GitHub Copilot can now help you write code for just $10 per month or $100 for a year. The free version will be available to students with the GitHub Global Campus Program and developers of popular open-source projects on GitHub. There is also a free trial for 60 days. At the end of 2022, GitHub plans to launch a business subscription.

The AI-based programming assistant was developed in collaboration with the OpenAI project and uses the OpenAI Codex machine learning platform, trained on a large array of source codes hosted in public GitHub repositories.

GitHub Copilot helps developers write code by understanding its context. At the same time, the system respects the style of writing code and offers several options for adding — from which the developer can choose the most suitable one. According to data from GitHub, the latest data from Copilot indicates that approximately 40% of the code uploaded to the platform has been generated with this system.

Copilot is available as an add-on for various IDEs — Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Neovim, and development environments from JetBrains.

GitHub Copilot is currently used by over 1.2 million developers who joined the preview over the past year. Now, this figure will increase much more because the tool is finally available to anyone who wants to use it.
