OpenAI ChatGPT, an AI chatbot powered by GPT-3.5, has reached an estimated 100 million monthly active users just two months after its launch, making it the “fastest-growing consumer application of all time.”

This is faster than popular applications such as TikTok, which took nine months to reach 100 million monthly users, and Instagram, which took about two and a half years.

ChatGPT, a conversational large-scale language model, can discuss almost any topic on a human level, answer questions, and read context easily. The free public beta launched on November 30th has greatly impacted fields such as education, computer security, and finance and has also resulted in overwhelming demand. 

To keep up with this demand, OpenAI recently announced a $20 monthly subscription service, ChatGPT Plus, which offers faster response times, priority access during peak hours, and new features.

Google is responding to the rise of ChatGPT by developing its own AI chatbot, codenamed Apprentice Bard, based on its large-scale language model “LaMDA.” This AI chatbot will provide answers that reflect real-world situations, unlike ChatGPT. 

In the future, ChatGPT is expected to be installed in Microsoft’s Bing in a faster and more detailed version based on GPT-4, which could break down Google’s stronghold.
