Microsoft subsidiary GitHub has presented version 1.0 of the command line tool GitHub CLI.

GitHub only released the beta version of its terminal tool CLI last February. It has already been able to map the workflow from issue to release for the Team and Enterprise Cloud products.

GitHub did not provide the CLI tool for the self-hosted variant, the GitHub Enterprise Server. That led to some criticism.

With the transition from the beta to the stable version 1.0, GitHub is also making the tool’s capabilities available for the Enterprise Server from version 2.2. Terminal users can now work with github.com and their own instances in a homogeneous manner.

In addition to mapping the workflow from issue to release, the GitHub API can also be addressed via the CLI. This allows scripting for almost every action and the definition of a self-defined alias for every desired command. 

The GitHub CLI is not yet fully supported. However, the developers have already promised to process issues and pull requests and add comments for a subsequent version.

GitHub CLI 1.0 is available for download on the project page for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The tool is maintained via GitHub. Contributors are welcome, GitHub CLI is under the liberal MIT license, which allows free use for private and commercial purposes.
