Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced creation of a new team dedicated to building tools powered by generative AI. This team will explore various avenues such as text, images, video and multimodal experiences to build AI tools across Meta’s apps and services. The ultimate goal is to create “AI personas” designed to help people in various ways.

Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta’s AI and machine learning vice president, will lead the new AI team who previously worked in Apple’s Specialty Products Group. According to Axios, the team is currently exploring how to integrate AI in WhatsApp and Messenger chats, creative filters and ad formats on Instagram, and other experiences across Meta’s platforms.

While Meta has already announced its large-scale language model called LLaMA and two AI chatbots, Galactica and Blenderbot, these were aimed more towards researchers than consumers. However, with the creation of this new AI team, Meta aims to improve and incorporate generative AI capabilities within each app, offering futuristic experiences for its users.

Meta’s announcement comes at a time when several companies, including Microsoft, Google and Snapchat, are also entering the generative AI space. As OpenAI’s ChatGPT continues to gain popularity, it will be interesting to see how Meta competes with other tech giants to develop AI capabilities.

With Meta’s focus on AI, we can expect to see more advancements soon that will change how we interact with technology.
